First time in Indonesia: Komodo trip tips
Updated 23 October 2026
Komodo travel tips for first timers come down to four checks: a passport valid for at least 6 months, travel insurance with medical evacuation, rupiah cash for the islands, and a flight into Labuan Bajo on Thursday. Entry rules change, so verify every requirement on the official site before you travel.
Komodo travel tips for first timers begin at the border
Entry rules are the part of this page most likely to change. What follows is what we have on file, dated in the table, and you should verify it on the official immigration site before you travel.
Most nationalities enter on a 30-day visa on arrival or apply online in advance; the table shows eligibility, the fee on file and the extension rule. Your passport needs validity beyond your arrival date and blank pages, and you need proof of onward travel. A digital arrival card is filled in online before you land. Check the fee in force on the day you travel, not the one in last year's blog post.
Your passport name matters twice. It must match the boat's passenger list, because the harbour issues the electronic boarding pass in that name.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |
| Extension | Once, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end. |
| Visa-free entry | 30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Onward ticket | Proof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA |
| All Indonesia arrival card | Free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. |
| Arriving in Labuan Bajo | Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight |
| Bali tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee. |

Flights into Labuan Bajo
Komodo Airport (LBJ) takes domestic flights, and most visitors connect through Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB). Direct international flights are limited. A first-time visitor lands in Bali, then takes the hop to Flores.
The Bali leg takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Check the current timetable of the airline you book with.
Land on Thursday for a Friday sailing. The shared trip picks you up around 09:00, and the boat is back around 12:00 on day 3, so book the flight home for after 14:00. We advise on the day and the route; we do not sell air tickets.
| Airport | Komodo International Airport, code LBJ |
|---|---|
| Usual connections | Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB); Lombok and Kupang are smaller feeders |
| Flight time to Labuan Bajo | From Bali about 1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min; from Surabaya about 1 h 30 min; from Jakarta 2 h 30 min to 3 h; from Lombok about 1 h |
| Airlines | Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia from Bali and Jakarta; Super Air Jet from Surabaya; Wings Air on the shorter island routes. Schedules change, so check before you book. |
| Airport to the harbour | 2 to 3 km, about 10 minutes by car |

Money, phone and plugs
Cash comes first. The currency is the Indonesian rupiah, and ATMs stand in Labuan Bajo town and at the airport, not on the islands. Hotels, boat companies and larger restaurants take cards, and small shops, warungs and taxis expect cash. Tips for the crew and guide are not in any fare and are appreciated, not compulsory.
Phone signal comes and goes between islands; do not plan on video calls from the water. A local SIM from Telkomsel, registered with your passport, gives the best coverage in town and offshore, and an eSIM installed before you fly works too.
Sockets take two round pins at 230 V. A small adapter and a power bank cover a three-day trip.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

| SIM cards | Every SIM must be registered; visitors register with a passport |
|---|---|
| Best network | Telkomsel has the widest coverage in Labuan Bajo and offshore; signal is still patchy between the islands |
| eSIM | Install it before you fly and activate it on landing; a typical plan of 25 GB for 30 days costs about USD 15 to 22 |

Health, water and the sea
Buy travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation before you fly. It is strongly advised and it is not included in any Kanha fare.
Tap water is not safe to drink. Mineral drinking water is served on board, and bottled water is the rule in town. Pharmacies in Labuan Bajo carry the basics with a limited choice, so bring prescription medicine and sunscreen from home. Dengue is present, so protect against mosquito bites on land.
The boats carry life jackets, snorkelling gear and a first-aid kit. Tell the crew about any medical condition when you board. The sea is calmer in the dry season, from April to November, with windier spells in July and August, and rougher from December to March.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

| Tap water | Not safe to drink; use sealed bottled or filtered water |

What to pack
The bring list is short and sensible: sunblock, sunglasses and a beach hat, snacks, a dry bag and swimsuit, trekking sandals, toiletries and wet wipes, personal medicine and a Telkomsel SIM card.
Shampoo, soap and a towel are provided on board, and air conditioning runs in every cabin. Kanha Citta and Kanha Loka also provide a bath and pool towel. Snorkelling gear and life jackets are on the boat, so you carry only your own mask if you prefer one.
Add a photocopy of your passport, some cash in small notes and a light long-sleeved shirt for the Komodo walk. A soft bag packs into a cabin better than a hard suitcase.
Port rules on sailing day
Sailing permission at Labuan Bajo comes from the harbour authority, and park access is controlled by the national park office. Neither is something a boat company can override.
Carry your passport on Friday morning. Passengers on tourist boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list. Life jackets must be on board for every passenger, and we book Kanha Citta and Kanha Loka for up to 22 guests and Kanha Natha for up to 12.
The harbour authority can close sailings at a day's notice, most often in the wet season and in strong south-east wind spells. Our replacement-boat guarantee covers a boat that cannot sail; it cannot change the weather.
| Who decides | The harbour master's office (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues each boat's sailing permit; the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) controls access to the park |
|---|---|
| Boarding pass | Passengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list; your boat company registers you |
| Safety on board | The harbour master's guideline requires life jackets and liferafts sufficient for everyone on board, no more passengers than the boat's capacity, and a weather check before each sailing permit |
| Recent closures | 1 to 8 February 2025: Komodo and Padar closed, Rinca only. 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026: staged closures, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. 6 to 8 August 2026: Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, Rinca open. |

FAQ
Do I need a visa for Indonesia before a Komodo trip?
Many nationalities enter on a 30-day visa on arrival or apply for an e-VoA online before travel, and others need a visa in advance. Eligibility and fees change, so verify them on the official immigration site before you travel. Your passport needs 6 months of validity and proof of onward travel.
How much cash should I carry on the trip?
Enough rupiah for tips, drinks and snacks, because ATMs stand in Labuan Bajo and at the airport, not on the islands. Tips for the crew and guide are not in any Kanha fare and are appreciated, not compulsory. The park ticket appears on your quote as its own line.
Will my phone work on the boat?
Signal comes and goes between islands, so do not plan on video calls from the water. Telkomsel has the best coverage in town and offshore, and an eSIM or a registered SIM works once you have landed. Download maps, tickets and your itinerary before Friday morning.
Is travel insurance required?
It is not mandatory, and we strongly advise it. Take cover for trip cancellation, medical evacuation and belongings, and buy it before you pay the deposit. No Kanha fare includes insurance, and Labuan Bajo has a private hospital and a public one.
What should I pack for three days on a Kanha boat?
Sunblock, sunglasses, a beach hat, a dry bag, a swimsuit and trekking sandals, plus wet wipes, personal medicine and snacks. Shampoo, soap and a towel are on board, and snorkelling gear and life jackets too. Cabins have air conditioning, so a light layer helps at night.
