The best photo spots in Komodo National Park, stop by stop

Updated 23 October 2026

The best photo spots in Komodo National Park by boat are Padar at sunrise, Pink Beach in the morning and Kalong at dusk, all on the 3D2N route. A party of 6 on Kanha Natha pays IDR 57,840,000 (≈ USD 3,548) for the whole boat, IDR 9,640,000 (≈ USD 591) each. The shared trip includes documentation.

Choose your Kanha for photographers

Photographers want three things from a boat: space for gear, the freedom to be up early and a deck that is theirs in the evening. Kanha Natha gives the most of all three to a party of 4 to 8. It has 4 cabins, 5 crew and a sun deck, so a group of friends who photograph can arrange the boat around the light. It has no bar area.

Kanha Citta and Kanha Loka carry up to 22 guests on a shared trip and up to 20 on a private charter. Both have a sun deck, a restaurant and bar area and, on Loka, a lounge deck with cushioned seating as photographed. A photography workshop of 14 or more belongs on one of them.

On the shared trip you travel with strangers and the schedule is shared, so your best light is whatever the group agrees. On a private charter you and the captain agree the order of the stops. That is the real difference for photographers.

The route is identical on all three boats. The question is who sets the alarm.

The stops, in the order the light favours them

On all three boats the 3D2N route is fixed, and the captain decides on the day whether weather or tide changes it. Here is what each day offers a camera.

Day 1. Manjarite is the first underwater frame of the trip. Kelor is a short, steep climb to a bay viewpoint. Kalong is the sunset and the bats, the evening that most photographers remember.

Day 2. Padar comes first because the light is best at sunrise. Pink Beach follows in the morning, then Komodo Island with a ranger for the wild dragons, then Manta Point for snorkelling in a strong current.

Day 3. Sebayur and Taka Makassar are morning and midday stops for sand, shallow reef and a crescent-shaped sandbank that appears at low tide.

Plan the camera for the sun deck at the end of each day. It is the stage for the evening, and the one place on board where the light, the horizon and a seat are all available.

Padar and Pink Beach

Padar is the first stop of day 2. The classic viewpoint looks over three bays whose sand is three different colours. The climb takes about 25 to 45 minutes and the path is loose and steep in places, so wear sturdy shoes. Guests leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise, and a headtorch helps in the dark. Sunrise falls at a different time each month, as the table shows, so the start moves with the calendar.

Pink Beach is the second stop. The pink tint comes from fragments of red coral in the sand, and it reads as pale pink, not bright pink, so judge it by light and tide. Morning light is softer and the water calmer. The reef sits close to the shore, which makes it the easiest stop for a waterproof camera.

Some itineraries call it Long Beach. Same place, same pink.

Kalong at dusk

Kalong is a mangrove islet between Komodo and Rinca where thousands of flying foxes roost. It is not a landing stop. The show is watched from the boat. At dusk the bats leave the mangroves in a long stream, about 15 minutes after sunset, and the stream lasts roughly 30 minutes.

Sunset falls between 17:49 and 18:27 depending on the month. Arrive early, because the bats do not wait. A long lens and a charged camera help; a steady rest on the sun deck rail helps more.

The boat is your platform, so the viewpoint is the sun deck. We promise only that Kalong is on the route. The sky and the bats are not ours to promise.

Drone rules and permit

A drone in Komodo National Park needs a park permit. It is paid separately and can change, so no figure is quoted here. Without the permit the drone stays in the bag.

Tell us before you book if you plan to fly one. We confirm in writing what the permit costs and what it allows, and we add it to a written quote. Nothing is added to your fare without that quote. A photographer or drone operator is a service we quote on request, within hours.

Drone rules decide where you can fly and when, and the captain and park rangers apply them on the day. Plan an aerial shot of Padar's three bays, or of the boat at anchor, if the permit and the wind allow.

Documentation: included on the shared trip, extra on a private charter

The shared trip includes photo and video documentation, with the local guide. If you are travelling alone or as a couple and want photographs of yourselves, that is the cheaper way to have them.

A private charter does not include documentation. It is available on request, quoted separately, and the same holds for the guide. A party of 6 on Kanha Natha pays IDR 57,840,000 (≈ USD 3,548) for the boat, which is IDR 9,640,000 (≈ USD 591) each, and the documentation comes on top. Park tickets and ranger fees are never in the fare.

A photographer needs to land on the Thursday: the boats leave from Labuan Bajo only, and a flight from Bali takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Check the timetable. Fly home after 14:00 on the Sunday.

Photographs of Kanha Citta and Loka are on the photos page. Photographs of Kanha Natha are sent on WhatsApp on request. For a party of 6 who want the boat to themselves: Kanha Natha. For a workshop of 16: Kanha Loka.

FAQ

Can I fly a drone in Komodo National Park?

Only with a park permit. The permit is paid separately and can change, so no figure is quoted here. Tell us before you book and we confirm in writing the cost and conditions. Without the permit the drone stays in its bag, and the captain and the rangers apply the rules on the day.

Is documentation included on the boat trip?

Photo and video documentation is included on the shared trip. A private charter does not include it; it is available on request and quoted separately. The same holds for the local guide. Park tickets and ranger fees are never part of a fare.

What is the best stop for photographs?

Padar at sunrise is the stop for a wide landscape, over three bays with differently coloured sand. Kalong at dusk is the stop for atmosphere. Pink Beach gives colour in the morning. No sighting of light, dragons or mantas is guaranteed on any day.

Can I use a tripod on deck?

The boats neither provide nor ban a tripod. Bring a compact one, and the Kanha crew and the captain decide on the day whether the deck is steady enough while the boat is at rest. Kalong at dusk is the stop where a tripod helps most.

When is sunrise at Padar?

Sunrise at Padar moves through the year, from about 05:31 to 06:18 by month, so the start from the boat shifts with it. Guests leave about 65 minutes before sunrise. The table above lists each month, and your written itinerary names the day.
