A Komodo multi-generational family trip by boat, three generations on one deck

Updated 23 October 2026

For a Komodo multi-generational family trip by boat, start with Kanha Loka: its Family Ocean View sleeps 4 with a private balcony and bathroom, at IDR 6,000,000 (≈ USD 368) per person on the shared trip. A family of 8 can charter the whole of Kanha Natha for IDR 57,840,000 (≈ USD 3,548). Children aged 0 to 2 travel free.

Choose your Kanha for three generations

Kanha Loka is the boat for a family spanning three generations. It has 7 cabins and takes up to 22 guests on a shared trip. The Family Ocean View sleeps 4 guests, with its own bathroom and a balcony, so two parents and two children share one door and one view. Between the restaurant and bar area and the sun deck, grandparents can find a seat in the shade while the children are in the water.

Citta makes sense when a large family wants more cabins with private bathrooms. Of its 8 cabins, 7 are private, and the Gayatri room has the only private balcony aboard. Fares on Citta run higher than on Loka.

Smallest of the three, Natha has 4 cabins, 5 crew and space for 12. It suits a family of 6 to 12 who want the whole boat and an unhurried pace. There is no bar area, and for a family of 13 or more we suggest Citta or Loka.

Families seldom need the priciest cabin. What they need is enough doors, a bathroom close to every bed and some shade on deck. Choose on those, then look at the price.

Ages, free places and a third guest in a cabin

Children aged 0 to 2 travel free. Once a child reaches 3, the full fare is charged. No minimum age is published, so let us know how old your child is and we will confirm in writing whether the trip suits them. On a question involving a toddler, we never guess.

For a family of three, the simplest way to stay together is a third guest in a private cabin. On the shared trip, cabins with an extra bed charge that third guest a separate per-person rate:

  • Kanha Citta, Gayatri and Shakti & Sedana rooms: IDR 5,400,000.
  • Kanha Loka, Master Ocean View and Deluxe Ocean View: IDR 5,100,000.
  • Kanha Natha, both Private Ocean View cabins: IDR 4,500,000.

Cabins with no extra bed hold 2 guests, never more: the Deluxe Main Deck on Citta and the Superior Lower Deck on Loka. Any private cabin on the shared trip needs at least 2 guests, and the Family Ocean View needs 4.

Shared-trip fares cover the local guide and documentation. Park tickets and ranger fees are always extra.

Grandparents: boarding, heat and rest

None of the three boats promises step-free boarding. No ramp or lift is listed, and we will not claim one. If a grandparent walks slowly, uses a stick or finds steps difficult, tell us before you pay. We check with the Kanha crew and confirm in writing what they can manage on the day.

Heat is the other thing to plan for. Komodo is hot, and there is little shade on the trails or on the Taka Makassar sandbar. All three boats have air conditioning in every cabin, so an afternoon rest stays cool, and older guests can choose between the sun deck and the dining area. Pack hats, sunscreen and closed shoes for everyone.

No one has to climb Padar. The boat is the base, and grandparents can stay on deck with the crew while the rest spend 25 to 45 minutes walking up to the viewpoint. Kelor is shorter but steep, and Komodo has short, medium and long trails, with a park ranger leading; most day visits take a shorter one.

Pace counts for more than fitness. The captain sets the order of the stops on the day, and a grandparent who sits one out has still had the whole trip.

Which stops suit children

Day 1 starts gently. Manjarite is a snorkelling stop, with gear and life jackets on board, and Kalong at dusk is the one children talk about afterwards: thousands of flying foxes streaming out of the mangroves while you watch from the boat. Bring a charged camera and an adult with patience.

Day 2 is the long day. Padar's ground is loose and steep, a climb for children who enjoy walking, and on Komodo a ranger leads the walk and decides the way. Closed shoes are essential. Pink Beach is an easy swim, with reef just off the shore. At Manta Point the current is strong, so we suggest younger children watch from the boat unless a parent swims alongside them in a life jacket.

Day 3 is the calmest. Sebayur has easy snorkelling, and the shallow water around the Taka Makassar sandbar suits most swimmers.

Teenagers take to this route most easily: first up Padar, and asking for karaoke by dinner. All three boats have it, along with a Bluetooth sound system.

The Family Ocean View on Kanha Loka, and the other ways to sleep four

Across the three boats, the Family Ocean View is the only cabin for 4 guests with a balcony and bathroom of its own. On the shared trip it costs IDR 6,000,000 (≈ USD 368) per person, with a minimum of 4. A family of four who book it have the cabin to themselves.

Four people can also take two cabins. On Kanha Loka that means two Superior Lower Deck cabins, 2 guests each, each with its own bathroom. On Kanha Citta it means two Deluxe Main Deck cabins, again 2 guests apiece. On Natha it means both Private Ocean View cabins, each with an extra bed: one has a balcony, the other opens straight onto the sun deck.

Two cabins cost more than one family cabin, but they divide the generations neatly, grandparents in one room and parents with children in the other, each with a private bathroom. Every fare per boat is on the cabins and prices page. Bed sizes are confirmed in writing.

A shared trip or your own boat for the family

The shared trip sails every Friday, with the local guide and documentation included. For a family of 4 in the Family Ocean View it works well: you share the deck with other guests, not your cabin. A private charter suits families of 8 or more who want to set their own schedule.

A family of 8 on a private Kanha Natha pays IDR 57,840,000 (≈ USD 3,548) for the boat, or IDR 7,230,000 (≈ USD 444) per person. On Kanha Loka, 14 guests pay IDR 112,320,000 (≈ USD 6,891). The charter covers the boat, crew, meals and snorkelling gear. The guide and photo and video documentation are not part of it; they are available on request and priced separately.

Families fly in on the Thursday, because the boats depart from Labuan Bajo only; the Bali flight is about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and your airline's current timetable has the final word. Sail on Friday and fly home after 14:00 on Sunday. Shared-trip timings: collected around 09:00 on day 1, returned around 12:00 on day 3.

For a family of 8 who want the boat to themselves: Kanha Natha. For a family of 4 who want a balcony: Kanha Loka.

FAQ

Can grandparents join a Komodo boat trip?

Yes, provided they are comfortable on a boat and can manage a few steps when boarding. Step-free boarding is not offered on any of the three boats. Tell us about mobility needs before you pay and we confirm in writing what is possible. No one has to climb Padar; the boat is the base.

What is the minimum age for a Komodo boat trip with kids?

No minimum age is published. Children aged 0 to 2 travel free; at 3 and over, the full fare applies. Let us know your child's age when you ask for a quote, and we confirm in writing, before you pay, whether the route suits them.

Which cabin suits a family of four?

The Family Ocean View on Kanha Loka, at IDR 6,000,000 (≈ USD 368) per person on the shared trip, minimum 4 guests. It is made for 4, with an ensuite bathroom and a balcony. Other families book two cabins instead, one per generation.

Is a private boat better for a family with teenagers and grandparents?

Chartering privately puts the schedule in your hands, which helps when ages range widely. A family of 8 on Kanha Natha pays IDR 57,840,000 (≈ USD 3,548) for the boat. On a private charter the guide and documentation cost extra; on the shared trip both are included.

Can one family booking mix cabin types?

Yes. Grandparents can take a Deluxe Ocean View on Kanha Loka while parents and children have the Family Ocean View, all on the same Friday sailing. Each cabin is charged per person at its own fare, with a minimum of 2 guests for a private cabin and 4 for the Family Ocean View.
