Komodo dragon tour: Komodo Island or Rinca?

Updated 23 October 2026

A Komodo dragon tour on a Kanha trip means the walk on Komodo Island on day 2, after Padar and Pink Beach; Rinca isn't on the route. Entry is ticketed per guest (IDR 250,000 for foreign visitors), capped by the park agency since 1 April 2026, and every trek has a ranger. Sightings are likely, never guaranteed.

Two islands, two different walks

Both islands sit inside Komodo National Park, and both put you on a ranger-led walk among wild dragons. They are different outings. Indonesia's tourism board says Rinca has the larger dragon population, around 2,000 animals, with routes from a short loop to walks of roughly 1 to 3 hours, and the ferry from Labuan Bajo to the Loh Buaya pier takes about 2 hours (Indonesia.travel, read 23 October 2026). On Komodo Island the ranger post is at Loh Liang, and the walks run 45 to 120 minutes across short, medium and long trails.

Which island shows more dragons on the day is the question everyone asks. None of the published sources ranks them, so this article does not either. What they do give is scale: the park agency's capacity study puts Komodo Island at 187,245 visitors a year, Rinca at 44,165 and Padar at 17,885 (Antara, 14 April 2026). Padar is part of the same park but not of this question; its ridge walk has no dragons.

The 2026 visitor limits

Since 1 April 2026 the park agency, BTNK, has capped entry at 1,000 visitors a day, following a trial that started in January (Antara, 14 April 2026; Floresa, 7 April 2026). The reason given is ecological: heavy human activity can lower the dragons' alert response, and reef condition in park waters is declining.

The annual quota for 2026 is 365,000 visitors, and CNN Indonesia reported on 29 September 2026 that it had been used up since August. BTNK has since added quota for the rest of the year with a maximum of 500 visitors a day, and that extra allowance no longer runs on the 1,000 limit. For the remaining Fridays of the year, plan around the lower number.

Bookings go through BTNK's online system, SiORA, and tour operators are asked not to assume guests can enter without booking ahead. The Forestry Ministry says the quota will be reviewed regularly (Antara, 25 April 2026). A rise is a possibility, not a date.

Park fees under PP 36/2024

Government Regulation 36 of 2024 replaced the 2014 rules for Komodo from 30 October 2024 (Antara Kupang, 26 October 2024). Foreign visitors pay IDR 250,000 per person, whatever the day. Indonesian visitors pay IDR 50,000 on ordinary days and IDR 75,000 on holidays. A single ticket covers trekking, wildlife viewing and snorkelling; diving, drone flights and fishing cost extra.

Ranger and pier levies come on top, are paid separately and can change, and your quote shows the park line on its own.

None of this sits inside the Kanha fare. The Komodo National Park ticket is excluded on the shared trip and the private charter alike. Shared trips start from IDR 4,500,000 (≈ USD 276) per person, park ticket extra.

Ranger rules on the trail

Every walk has a ranger, and nobody treks on Komodo Island without one. The official sources checked for this article publish no minimum distance to keep from a dragon, so no number is given here. On the day, do what the ranger tells you.

Wear closed shoes. Cover your shoulders or put on sunscreen, because there is little shade on the trails. And remember that the dragons are wild: a sighting is likely, never guaranteed.

Zones are enforced. On 2 February 2026, BTNK and the Manggarai Barat water police detained 16 foreign tourists on Rinca who were in a zone closed to tourism and had no entry tickets (detikBali, 3 February 2026). Closures do happen in this park, and a guide who keeps you inside the lines is simply doing the job.

What this means for your dates

A Friday sailing reaches Komodo Island on day 2, the Saturday, after Padar and Pink Beach. The order is Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo, then Manta Point, and the captain can change it for weather. The next shared departure is Friday, 6 November 2026; all three Kanha boats sail on Fridays.

  • Saturday is busy. Floresa names Tuesday and Saturday as the park's peak arrival days, so that's when the daily limit is most likely to bite. Ask for your park ticket to be booked early.
  • The ticket carries a date. CNN Indonesia says part of the quota ran out because visitors went in earlier than the date on their tickets. Yours should show the Saturday of your trip.
  • Weather can move the Komodo stop. Sea closures have halted park sailings in 2026. If a stop closes, the captain re-plans the day.
  • Rinca isn't on the route. A private charter can ask about it, but it isn't promised.
  • Private charter: the guide is on request and quoted separately. A park ranger is required either way.

Whether the lower daily limit carries on into 2027 has not been published. Rates for 2027 are on request.

FAQ

Is Komodo Island or Rinca better for seeing Komodo dragons?

The published sources do not rank them for sightings. Indonesia.travel describes Rinca as home to the larger population, around 2,000 dragons, while Komodo Island has trails of 45 to 120 minutes from Loh Liang. On either island a sighting is likely, never guaranteed. A Kanha trip does its walk on Komodo Island.

How much is the Komodo National Park ticket in 2026?

Under PP 36/2024, foreign visitors pay IDR 250,000 per person, and Indonesian visitors pay IDR 50,000 on ordinary days and IDR 75,000 on holidays. The ticket covers trekking, wildlife viewing and snorkelling. Ranger levies are separate, and the ticket is never part of the Kanha fare.

Do I need to book the park ticket in advance?

Yes. Entry is reserved through BTNK's SiORA system under a daily limit that has applied since 1 April 2026. Ask for the ticket to be booked for the day you walk on Komodo Island, which on a Friday trip is the Saturday. We show the park line separately on every quote.

Does the Friday Kanha trip visit Rinca?

No. The route takes in Komodo Island on day 2 and doesn't include Rinca. A private charter can ask about a change, which is discussed with the captain and isn't promised. Weather and park closures can also reorder or remove stops.
